It’s just like riding a bike

My husband got me the best birthday present and possibly the best present I’ve ever gotten; a bike. This bike isn’t super fancy or expensive (hi, Walmart!) but it’s mine and it was so thoughtful. We had been talking about something active to do together and riding bikes was at the top of our list. He took me on a surprise trip to pick and test out the bike. Guys, you should have seen me in the isle’s of Walmart. It was not “just like riding a bike” for me, I honestly thought I was going to be like Phoebe in Friends when Ross gifts her with her first bike ever. If you’ve never seen the show (the horror!) or the episode, the short version is this; Ross gives Phoebe her first bike and everyone finds out Phoebe just walks her bike everywhere and never rides it because she doesn’t know how to ride a bike. Spoiler alert, Ross does “teach” her how to ride a bike but as the camera pans out she’s using training wheels.

Anywaysssss, the difference between Phoebe and I was that I sorta kinda knew how to ride a bike but it had been about 8 years. The similarities are that I asked Joe if we could invest in some adult training wheels ☺️ Let’s just say, I was a hot mess in Walmart, literally, I was actually sweating because it was hot in there but I was nervous. I didn’t want everyone to realize this newly 31 year old woman has no freaking clue how to ride a bike! Side note: because of this I had to BEG Joe not to force me to wear a helmet…that would have brought great shame on me.

For the first few days after getting the bike home Joe and I would go outside and I’d practice for a little while. Turning was a skill that took me a while to acquire. I was nervous to go too far down the street so I kept having to get off the bike to turn it back around. I was also super embarrassed that I was learning how to ride a bike all over again that at one point a group of teenagers came rolling down the street on their skateboards and I immediately jumped off the bike and got “distracted” by my shoe. Believe me, I know how mean teenagers can be.

I was being so hard on myself for really no reason at all which seems to be a running theme in my life. Every time I would ride a little ways down the street I would look back at my husband with the excitement of a child and he was always standing there yelling how proud he was of me. It was so encouraging and exactly what I needed to continue to relearn how to balance on a bike. When we finally started riding around the block he secretly filmed me. I was mortified when he showed it to me because, hello insecurities, but because he was so proud to show me off I was a little bit too.

All of this might seem really silly to some of you but it triggered something in me because I have the hardest time being proud of myself. For some reason I just can’t accept and acknowledge my own accomplishments. One of the biggest examples in my life was when I finally graduated college after working my butt off for 10 years, I wasn’t even proud. I was going through my first experience with depression and I was embarrassed that it had taken me 10 years. I was frustrated that my life hadn’t turned out like all the others around me and I was heartbroken that I wasn’t in the same phase of life as my closest friends.

Honestly, my life has never looked like anyone else’s that I’ve known and as I’ve gotten older that fact has gotten a little easier to understand or accept. What hasn’t seemed to get easier is the comparison. I’m always really happy for people when great things happen to them but it definitely brings out deep insecurities in me. I start asking myself, why couldn’t you do that? Or why don’t you do better or work harder or blah blah bledity blah! Exhausting right?!

It has to stop, the madness has to end. Do you struggle with this too or is it just me? How can we fight against the comparison trap? I don’t know yet honestly. I’m currently living in this state but trying to work my way out. BUT; let’s first start with acknowledging we’re like this and accept it. I don’t mean to just say “okay, this is how I am so I can’t change.” NO, it’s being real with who we are and learning from it. Confronting what we’re really thinking and feeling. Be real!

I would LOVE to connect with you about this if you’re currently feeling this way, have any thoughts about it, or just want to say hi.

Sincerely,

Venice

July Favorites

Where did July go?! I feel like time is flying by and I can’t believe it’s already August. I don’t know about you but I am really excited for the second half of this year. This past weekend, Joe and I, took a trip to Vero Beach to celebrate being married for 6 months and a new and exciting chapter for our shop (he’s a brilliant mechanic!).

We needed this vacation! Our first few months of marriage were very challenging, you can read about that here. The last 3 months have been so much better which I’ll share more about later. We really loved Vero and plan on going back for sure.

Here are a few things that I’ve been loving this month.

  1. Chopped Salad Kits – I’m typically not a salad lover especially when I make them at home. There’s so many things you have to wash and chop and it’s a lot of work for just a salad. Yeah, I said that salad lovers, just a salad. BUT then on a whim I bought a couple chopped salad kits from Aldi and LOVED them! I just had an entire bag for lunch on Monday. Let me know if you try one 🙂
  2. This nail UV LED light. A coworker of mine recommended this to me after I had complemented her nails multiple times. I’ve used it twice now and it’s SO easy and budget friendly. I bought these nail polishes to try; polish set and top and base coat.
  3. Yasso dessert bars! A super popular blogger I recently started following was always recommending them and I thought, why not? I tried them and they are delicious!! I’m trying to make some smarter food choices while still enjoying the good stuff. This has been a super easy switch. So far I’ve had the cookie dough, mint chocolate chip, and s’mores; all good! **chocolate peanut butter is the BEST!!**
  4. Young Living Seedling Wipes – I use these suckers every night. I HATE washing my face at night out of sheer laziness so I always make sure I have makeup remover wipes on my bedside table. They smell like lavender (the best) and are incredibly gentle. They have a whole line called Seedlings, which is technically baby stuff, but I love these and the linen spray they have. You need to try!30412179_10213820362877252_6249789031907852288_n.jpg5. Gilmore Girls – this is definitely in my very tippy top favorite shows of all time; this and The Office. My best friend has been watching the series for the first time while she’s on maternity leave and it gave me a hankering (southern speak) to      re-watch the series for the 600th time. Little did I know my husband would watch it with me! It’s been such a fun show to watch together and he will deny this but he actually really likes it…sorry babe 🙂

What’s one of your favorite things from July?

On my bookshelf

I am struggling, I mean seriously struggling to read a book lately. I typically love reading but I guess I can’t find a book that I can stick to all the way through. I just finished an audio book and I still don’t know why I finished it because it was soon anticlimactic!

Have you ever read a book that had good reviews but you hated it?! Hate might be a strong word but I wish the ending was better. What felt like 85 hours later I finally finished Before the Fall by Noah Hawley. Do you have any great audio book recommendations?

In hopes of getting my reading bug back below are the most recent books that are on my reading list.

  1. Start.: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, and Do Work That Matters by Jon Acuff. This book was recommended to me by my amazing life coach, Laine Schmidt. I’ll share more on life-coaching later! I love books that leave me feeling inspired and I always need a good kick in the right direction.
  2. Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be by Rachel Hollis. I think the title says it all.
  3. The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile. Do you love personality tests like I do?! I was a psychology major and I love getting a deeper understanding of who I am and why I might think or act a certain way.
  4. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. I need a fun and light hearted book in this list. I’ve heard really great things about this book. It’s also being made in to a movie and I’d like to read it before it comes out!

Let me know what you’re reading below!

The BEST vegan banana bread .

You should know right off the bat I did not create this delicious recipe. I wish I did or was even capable of that. How does one even write their own recipe?! Sounds hard.

My husband and I were vegan for a short while before we got married and tried again right after. I really thought it was going  to “solve” some of my health stuff but it was really time consuming. Eating vegan felt like a full time job. Do you realize how many vegetables you need to eat to veganize your plate?! I did find two really great recipes that I still make often and one is this banana bread, by The Baking Fairy! It’s really easy and doesn’t take any fancy or weird ingredients. With just 10 minutes of prep, pop this baby in the oven and go on with your regular schedule for the next 45 minutes or so.

You’ll need:

  • 3 medium ripe bananas (this is my only tweak, I use 4! More flavor 🙂
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup almond milk
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (a heaping tsp for me!)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • sliced bananas, for topping

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F, spray your loaf pan with non stick spray. I use Trader Joe’s Coconut Oil spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mash your bananas but not too mushy. I actually use my potato masher 🙂 Add the brown sugar, oil, vanilla, and almond milk. Whisk to incorporate (I just use a wooden spoon, one less thing to clean).
  3. Add in your flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon and stir with a wooden spoon.
  4. Pour your mixture in your pan and top with your sliced bananas.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes depending on your oven temp. Then cover with foil and bake for 10-15 more minutes until your toothpick comes out clean.

This bread is so good! I like it warm or cold. While it’s warm make sure to top with some Kerrygold butter, you won’t regret it.

Enjoy – Let me know if you make it!
